📌 Quick answer: JAMB says public universities, including UI, OAU, UNN, ABU and UNILAG, must conclude 2026/2027 admissions by 31 October 2026. Private universities have until 30 November, and polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions until 31 December 2026. This week, check JAMB CAPS every day, accept any offer promptly, and make sure your O’level results are uploaded. If no public university offer comes by 31 October, you can still be considered by private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, and you can change your institution on JAMB’s portal.
For many 2026 UTME candidates, the next seven days decide the year. Every admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college of education must go through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), and JAMB has set firm closing dates for each type of institution. Here is what the deadlines mean, what to do now, and what your options are if the offer you hoped for does not come.
The 2026/2027 Admission Deadlines
| Type of institution | Admissions must be concluded by | Minimum UTME score (2026 policy) |
|---|---|---|
| Public universities (federal and state) | 31 October 2026 | 150 |
| Private universities | 30 November 2026 | 150 |
| Polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions | 31 December 2026 | 100 |
JAMB restated these dates in late September after CAPS went offline. In a statement, Dr Fabian Benjamin said the platform had been unavailable for about 96 hours because of an administrative challenge involving its hosting organisation, and had been fully restored. He urged institutions to “intensify their admission processes” to meet the agreed timelines, and said that “all admissions for the 2026/2027 academic session are expected to be concluded by December 31, 2026.”
What to Do This Week
- Check CAPS daily. Log in to JAMB’s portal with your registered email and open “Check Admission Status”. Offers can appear at any time, and some institutions release several batches close to the deadline. Our step-by-step guide shows how to check your admission status on CAPS.
- Accept a good offer promptly. JAMB’s statement advised candidates “to promptly accept admission offers made to them.” An offer you leave pending is an offer you can lose.
- Upload your O’level results. Institutions cannot admit you without them. JAMB specifically told candidates who had been waiting for NECO results to “immediately upload and/or verify their results”. See how to upload your O’level result to CAPS.
- Check your school’s portal too. UI, OAU, UNN, ABU and other universities often publish lists or require online acceptance and screening steps on their own portals. An offer is only valid if it also appears on CAPS.
- Print your admission letter from JAMB’s portal after accepting, and keep it safe. You will need it for registration at your institution and later for NYSC.
Accept or Reject? How to Decide
Sometimes the offer on CAPS is not the course you applied for. Universities often offer a related course when a candidate meets the general requirements but misses the cut-off for their first choice. Before you respond, ask yourself:
- Does the offered course lead to a career you would accept? Many students change course internally after their first year, but that is never guaranteed.
- Is your score likely to win your preferred course at another institution before its deadline? If the public university deadline is a week away, the honest answer is often no.
- Would rejecting this offer leave you with nothing until next year?
If you reject an offer, there is no guarantee of another one before the deadlines.
If No Public University Offer Comes by 31 October
Missing out on a public university does not end your 2026/2027 chances. Your options:
- Private universities can admit until 30 November. If you meet a private university’s cut-off and can afford its fees, contact its admissions office now.
- Polytechnics and colleges of education can admit until 31 December, with a minimum UTME score of 100. A National Diploma can later lead to a degree through direct entry.
- Change your institution or course on JAMB’s e-Facility portal so that a school still admitting can consider you. The fee is ₦2,500 plus a ₦100 service charge; our guide explains how to change your course or institution on JAMB.
- Prepare for the 2027 UTME if none of these suits you. Use the time to improve your O’level results if they are holding you back.
Never Accept Admission Outside CAPS
Be very careful with anyone who offers you a university place “through the back door”, without an offer on CAPS. JAMB’s support desk says only graduates whose names appear on its matriculation list, which is built from admissions made through its system, are eligible for NYSC mobilisation. Students admitted outside CAPS often discover the problem only in their final year and then have to go through JAMB regularisation. Never pay an agent who promises admission.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the JAMB admission deadline for 2026?
31 October 2026 for public universities, 30 November for private universities and 31 December for polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions.
Has JAMB extended the 31 October deadline?
Not as of our latest check. After restoring CAPS in late September, JAMB restated the deadlines and urged institutions to speed up their admissions to meet them.
Have UI, OAU, UNN and ABU released their admission lists?
Universities release offers in batches, and public universities must conclude by 31 October. Check JAMB CAPS and your university’s official portal; an offer is only valid if it appears on CAPS.
What happens if I don’t accept my admission on CAPS?
An offer you do not accept is not secured. JAMB has advised candidates to accept offers promptly so that the admission timelines can be met.
Why was JAMB CAPS not working?
JAMB said CAPS was unavailable for about 96 hours in September 2026 because of an administrative challenge involving its hosting organisation. It has since been restored.
