Official rate or street rate?
The official rate is the rate published for the official foreign exchange market, where banks trade. The street rate is what Bureau de Change operators and street traders were quoting. Banks, fintech apps and card payments add their own margin, so the rate you are offered may differ from both.
Where the rates come from
NaijaSabi records each rate with its date and source in our exchange rate tracker. The converter uses the latest check. If a rate is more than a few days old, the converter says so.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the street rate different from the official rate?
They are two different markets. The official rate comes from trading between banks and other authorised dealers; the street rate is set by cash traders. The gap between them changes from day to day.
Which rate will my bank use?
Your bank’s own rate, usually close to the official rate plus a margin. Ask for the rate and any charges before you pay.
How up to date are the rates?
Each rate in the converter shows the date it was checked. If it is more than a few days old, the converter tells you, so check with your bank or a licensed dealer before you change money.
