Which Dates Are Correct? Read This First
Earlier in the year, several websites published 25 November to 12 December as the exam window and 17 November as the registration deadline. The guides that reproduce NECO’s reviewed 2026 registration guideline and signed timetable give 4–21 November and 26 October instead, and one of them warns that the late-November dates came from sources circulating before the reviewed guideline. This article follows the reviewed dates. We could not open NECO’s PDF directly, so confirm on neco.gov.ng or ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng before registering or travelling to a centre.

If the time on your virtual question paper differs from this timetable, the time on the question paper takes precedence. Always check your own subjects against the timetable printed from the portal, because that is the document that applies to you.
Registration Deadlines: What Is Left
- Regular registration: closes 26 October 2026 at midnight.
- Late registration: 27 October to 3 November, with an extra ₦5,000.
- Walk-in registration: allowed until at least three hours before the subject you intend to write, at ₦43,000.
- Documents you need: a valid NIN, a passport photograph no older than six months with a white background, and a visit to a cybercafé for fingerprint capture.
How the Dual-Mode CBT and Pen-and-Paper Format Works
NECO describes the 2026 SSCE External as dual mode: hybrid Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and Pen-and-Paper Examination (PPE) across the 16 subjects. The timetable refers to a “virtual question paper”, so objective papers appear to be taken on screen, while essay, theory and alternative-to-practical papers are handwritten. NECO has not published a subject-by-subject breakdown, so confirm at your assigned centre. Biometric verification also happens during the exam, not just at registration, and a mismatch in photo or fingerprints is treated as impersonation.
Exam-Day Rules
- Your photocard is compulsory for identification and entry.
- Be seated at least 30 minutes before each paper; nobody enters after the exam begins.
- Scientific calculators are allowed. Programmable calculators, phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses and smart pens are banned.
- Dress in mufti; no school uniform is needed. Smoking and arms are prohibited.
- Albino and blind candidates get 30 minutes extra on every paper.
- Do not register twice. Multiple registration cancels your entire result.
Photocard, Centre and Corrections
Your photocard needs a signed and stamped referee attestation (for example from a school principal, clergyman or Chief Imam, a senior civil servant on Grade Level 14 or above, or a legal practitioner with ten years’ experience). Visiting a NECO state office for stamping is no longer required in 2026. Centres are grouped into neighbourhoods within your state, and your neighbourhood cannot be edited after upload, so reprint your photocard at least two weeks before the exam to confirm your exact centre. Corrections are allowed once, before the exam begins; a complete change of name is not permitted.
Subjects Available in 2026
Only 16 subjects are offered: Accounting, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Christian Religious Studies, Civic Education, Commerce, Economics, English Language, General Mathematics, Geography, Government, Islamic Studies, Literature-in-English, Marketing and Physics. Further Mathematics, Computer Studies, Technical Drawing, French and the Nigerian languages are not available this cycle.
Results
NECO has not announced a release date for the November 2026 results. When released, they are checked at results.neco.gov.ng with a token, your registration number and the exam type set to SSCE External.
