📌 Quick Summary: Registration for the 2026 NECO SSCE External (the exam most people call NECO GCE) closes at midnight on 26 October 2026. The fee is ₦30,000 plus stamp duty, service and Remita charges. Late registration runs from 27 October to 3 November and costs an extra ₦5,000. The exam holds from 4 to 21 November 2026 in 16 subjects, in a mix of computer-based and pen-and-paper papers. You need a valid NIN, a white-background passport photograph not older than six months, and biometric capture at a cybercafé. Register only at ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng.
The NECO GCE is the second-chance route for candidates who need to write or improve their O’Level results. With the regular registration window closing on 26 October, the practical questions are the deadline, the exact fee, and what you must have in hand before you start. This guide follows NECO’s published registration notice, checks it against other education sites, and flags the points where sources disagree.
Where This Information Comes From
NECO’s own website is difficult to load on many phones because it renders with scripts. We read NECO’s 2026 SSCE External registration notice (signed by the Registrar, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi) and its timetable PDF as published by Myschool News, and cross-checked the fee, registration dates and exam period against three other education sites. They agree on the fee, the registration dates and the exam period. One site we saw gives a different deadline of 6 November; NECO’s notice does not, so treat any date later than 3 November as wrong. Always confirm on ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng before paying.

What You Need Before You Start
- A valid National Identification Number (NIN). NECO says you cannot complete registration without it, and that the NIN will be inscribed on your certificate.
- A passport photograph not more than six months old, with a white background. A system camera can also be used at the point of registration. The photograph you upload will be embossed on your certificate.
- An email address or phone number to create and activate your account.
- Money for the fee, payable into the NECO TSA by ATM card, internet banking, USSD, wallet or bank branch.
- A reputable cybercafé for the biometric fingerprint capture. NECO says fingerprints are captured during offline registration and there will be biometric verification during the exam.
How to Register, Step by Step
- Go to ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng, the registration site named in NECO’s notice.
- Create an account with your email or phone number and activate it.
- Pay for your registration quota through one of the five payment options listed above.
- Enter your biodata, including your NIN, and select an examination neighbourhood within the state where you will write. NECO groups exam centres into neighbourhoods, and says the neighbourhood cannot be edited after upload.
- Go to a reputable cybercafé for biometric capture and to complete registration. NECO advises checking every entry the cafe makes before your data is uploaded, because the Council is not liable for registration errors.
- Collect your timetable and at least one clear copy of your NECO photocard. Photocards with unclear photographs are not accepted at the exam centre.
- Get the Referee’s Attestation section of the photocard signed and stamped (see below).
- Reprint your photocard at least two weeks before the exam to confirm your exam centre.
Who Can Sign Your Photocard
NECO lists these referees for the Attestation section: the principal of a recognised secondary school; an ordained clergyman or a Chief Imam; a commissioned officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces or Police not below the rank of Captain or equivalent; a senior civil servant not below GL 14; or a legal practitioner with at least ten years’ experience. NECO states that candidates are no longer required to take photocards to a NECO state office for stamping.
