The ₦50,000 Fee From 2027

On 18 June 2026 the Federal Ministry of Education said it had approved a uniform examination fee of ₦50,000 per candidate for the WAEC and NECO senior school certificate exams, up from ₦27,500, an increase of about 82%. It follows a WAEC request for a review and a directive in March 2026 for both exam bodies to charge the same fee. The new fee starts with the 2027 exams. The statement covers school candidates; WAEC will announce fees for its 2027 private-candidate exams separately.

How to Register for the WAEC GCE (Private Candidates)

1. Buy a registration PIN: pay at a listed bank (such as Access, GTBank, UBA, Zenith or Sterling), through an accredited agent, through approved online channels, or at a WAEC office or registration point. You get a PIN and registration instructions.
2. Register online at waeconline.org.ng with your PIN, and complete biometric capture at an approved centre.
3. Choose your subjects carefully: register those you need for your intended course.
4. Finish on time: WAEC requires you to complete registration within two weeks of first logging in, and before the closing date.
5. Print your admission notice: you need the original to enter the exam hall.

WAEC says it intends to use computer-based testing for objective papers, with essay and practical papers handled separately, so check the format of each paper on your timetable.

Missed the deadline? You can still register as a walk-in candidate for ₦45,000, as long as you do so at least 24 hours before the paper you want to write. Otherwise, wait for the next series.

School Candidates: What Parents Should Check

• The fee: the WAEC fee for school candidates was ₦27,500 in 2026 and will be ₦50,000 from 2027. If your school charges much more, ask for a breakdown.
• Registration: make sure your child’s name was submitted, and ask for the examination details well before the exam.
• Details: check that the name, date of birth and subjects are correct. Names must match the birth certificate and NIN, or the result can cause problems later with JAMB and admission. Errors are easier to fix before the exam.

WAEC or NECO?

Nigerian universities and JAMB accept both WAEC and NECO results. WAEC certificates are recognised across its member countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia) and are widely accepted abroad. From 2027, school candidates will pay the same ₦50,000 for either exam. For NECO’s private-candidate exam, see our NECO GCE guide.
