MTN 5G Router Price in Nigeria (October 2026): Devices, Data Plans, Coverage and Whether It Is Worth Buying

📌 Quick answer (checked 14 October 2026): MTN Nigeria does not publish one clear, current price for its 5G router. Its own pages disagree: its 5G Broadband Router help page lists ₦60,000, and an older 5G page last modified in November 2024 lists ₦40,000. Techloy (February 2025) and The Condia (6 September 2026) both reported ₦80,000 from MTN’s online shop, with 100GB of welcome data. On Jumia on 14 October 2026, third-party “MTN 5G” listings ran from about ₦58,500 to nearly ₦199,000. Router data plans start at ₦9,000 for 30GB a month. “Unlimited” plans cost ₦30,000 to ₦65,000 a month and all have usage caps (Legit.ng, 3 June 2026; The Condia, 6 September 2026). Check 5G coverage at your exact address before you buy.

MTN’s 5G router gives you home or office broadband over the mobile network, with no cables and no installation visit. It works well in good 5G coverage, but coverage is still patchy and prices change often. This guide covers what NaijaSabi could confirm on 14 October 2026: what MTN itself says, what recent dated reports show, and what sellers are asking. Where a number could not be confirmed, we have left it out and explain how to check it yourself.

MTN 5G router price: what the sources actually say

Many websites quote one “official” price. In practice MTN’s own pages disagree with each other, and resellers charge very different amounts. Here is what each source says and when it was published or viewed:

What this means for you: the most recent dated report (The Condia, September 2026) puts the MTN-sold router at ₦80,000. MTN’s help page shows a lower ₦60,000, but because it has no date, treat it as a price to ask about, not a guarantee. Before you pay, confirm the price on the MTN eShop or at an MTN store on the same day.

Third-party prices on Jumia (viewed 14 October 2026)

On 14 October 2026, Jumia’s “MTN 5G router” listing page showed 271 results. Most are from independent sellers, not MTN. Some examples from the first page:

Marketplace prices change daily, and listing names are written by sellers. A high price does not mean a better device. Many expensive listings simply add a power bank. Check that the box names the exact model and comes with a warranty. Also make sure “universal” routers are not being sold as MTN-locked ones, or the reverse.

MTN router data plans (2026)

The 5G router uses MTN’s broadband/router bundles. MTN’s own router-plans page did not show prices when we checked on 14 October 2026, so the figures below come from two dated reports. Where they disagree, both figures are shown.

Capped plans

“Unlimited” plans and their limits

None of MTN’s router “unlimited” plans are truly unlimited. Each one has a fair-usage cap:

Source: Legit.ng (3 June 2026). The Condia (6 September 2026) reported the same four prices and caps.

Worked example: a home that uses about 300GB a month gets the most data per naira from Gold (₦40,000, full speed up to 400GB). Ruby costs ₦45,000 for only 260GB at full speed. On capped plans, 300GB would take, for example, a 200GB bundle (₦30,000) plus a 100GB bundle (₦20,000), which is ₦50,000 at The Condia’s September prices. Run the same sum with your own usage. Your phone’s or router’s data meter shows what you actually use in a month.

Why prices went up: the NCC tariff context

In January 2025 the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved telecom tariff increases of up to 50%. Operators got final approval for their new price plans on 10 February 2025, and MTN raised its prices straight away. For example, 20GB went from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500 (The Guardian, 11 February 2025). The router bundles above were priced after that change. Any further change has to stay within the framework the NCC approved, so look for an official MTN announcement before you trust a “new price list” shared on WhatsApp.

Is MTN 5G available where you live?

Your exact address matters more than any other factor. MTN’s 5G page only says the network is in “several locations nationwide” and does not name cities. 5G is still a small share of use in Nigeria. NCC data for May 2026, published on 31 July 2026, put 5G at 4.49% of mobile connections, up from 3.17% in August 2025 (Leadership, 31 August 2026). The same report found that more than 57,000 5G-capable devices in Lagos and Abuja could not connect to 5G, because coverage within those cities has large gaps.

1. Open MTN’s coverage locator (linked from mtn.ng/5g as “View 5G Coverage”) and enter your street, not just your city.
2. Check where you will place the router. Signal indoors, behind concrete walls, can be much weaker than on the street.
3. If you can, ask a neighbour with a 5G phone to run a speed test at your address.
4. If 5G isn’t available, the router falls back to 4G (MTN help page). You would then be paying 5G prices for 4G service.

How to set up and activate the MTN 5G router

MTN’s 5G Broadband Router help page (viewed 14 October 2026) gives these steps:

1. Register the bundled SIM at an MTN SIM registration point. Only MTN SIMs work in the router.
2. Link the router number to your phone number by dialling *312*500# and choosing option 1.
3. Activate the 100GB welcome data by texting 5GCPE to 312. It is valid for 30 days after activation.
4. Connect your devices by Wi-Fi or LAN cable. The router’s admin page is at 192.168.0.1.
5. Buy more data by dialling *461*1#, choosing a bundle, selecting “buy for others” and entering the router number. You can also use *312*500*3#, the MyMTN app, or MoMo via *671# (Legit.ng, June 2026).
6. Check your balance with *312*500*4*3#, on the MyMTN app, or on the 192.168.0.1 dashboard.

Unused data rolls over only if you renew within 7 days of expiry (MTN help page). Change the default admin password as soon as you first log in.

5G router vs 4G router vs FibreX

Our verdict: the 5G router is worth buying only if the coverage locator and a real speed test both show 5G at the spot where the router will sit, and you use enough data each month for the higher-speed plans to make sense. Otherwise, the 4G router costs less than half as much. If fibre reaches your building, FibreX avoids the 5G coverage question altogether.

Where to buy safely

• MTN eShop and MTN stores: the safest option for a genuine device and the one-year warranty. Ask staff to confirm the price and the welcome bonus on the day you buy.
• Jumia, Jiji and Computer Village / Wuse-type markets: sometimes cheaper, sometimes much dearer. Ask for the exact model, check the box and IMEI, and insist on a receipt. Test the router with an MTN SIM before you pay.
• Avoid sellers who won’t name the model, who promise “unlimited forever” data, or who ask you to pay before inspection on Jiji.
