Canada Express Entry for Nigerians 2026: CRS Cut-offs, IRCC Fees, Proof of Funds and the 3 November Changes

📌 Quick answer (checked 18 October 2026): Express Entry is still free to join, but if you are invited, IRCC’s fee for a principal applicant is CAD $1,590 (CAD $990 processing plus CAD $600 right of permanent residence fee), the same again for a spouse, and CAD $270 per dependent child, plus CAD $85 biometrics per person (CAD $170 family maximum). A single Federal Skilled Worker applicant must show CAD $15,263 in settlement funds. For Nigerians applying from home, the 2026 draws that matter have been French-language (lowest score 435 on 16 October), healthcare and social services (475 on 4 September) and trades (476 on 1 October). Canadian Experience Class draws (about 516–523) are only for people who already have Canadian work experience. Canada is still the first choice for many skilled Nigerians who want permanent residence (PR) through a points-based system they can manage themselves. A lot changed in 2026. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now runs ten selection categories, has made category work experience stricter (12 months), raised its fees, and has announced a change to how Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points work that starts on 3 November 2026.

This guide uses IRCC’s own published draw data and fee tables to explain what a Nigerian applicant needs to know today: the scores people are actually being invited at, the real government fees, the proof-of-funds amounts, and the steps from profile to landing.

What Express Entry Is

Express Entry is not a visa. It is the online system IRCC uses to manage three federal economic programs:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): the usual route for Nigerians with skilled work experience at home.
• Canadian Experience Class (CEC): for people with skilled work experience gained in Canada.
• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): for qualified tradespeople.

You create a free profile and IRCC gives you a CRS score out of 1,200. It then holds “rounds of invitations”, either for the whole pool, for one program, or for one category, and sends an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to the highest-ranked people who qualify. IRCC’s distribution data for the 16 October 2026 round showed about 229,000 profiles in the pool (as of 12 October).

Do You Qualify? Federal Skilled Worker Minimums

According to IRCC’s FSW page (updated 16 October 2026), you need all of these before you can even enter the pool under FSW:

Approved language tests: for English, IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core; for French, TEF Canada or TCF Canada. IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted. Your results must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit your PR application. If they expire in between, your application will be refused.

How the CRS Score Is Built

IRCC’s CRS criteria page (updated 16 October 2026) gives these maximums:

Age has a big effect. A single applicant gets 110 points for age at 20 to 29. That falls to 105 at 30, 94 at 32, 83 at 34, 72 at 36, 61 at 38, 50 at 40, 28 at 42, and nothing from 45. Someone applying at 33 starts about 22 points behind someone applying at 29.

Language is the factor you can improve fastest. Language feeds both the core points and the skill-transferability points. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 is often the quickest way for a Nigerian applicant to add a meaningful number of points.

A provincial nomination is worth 600 points. With a nomination through Express Entry, an invitation is close to certain. IRCC’s PNP rounds in 2026 have closed between about 697 and 772.

The 3 November 2026 CRS Change

IRCC’s “What has changed” page (updated 16 October 2026) says that from 3 November 2026:

• A new Labour Market Integration factor awards points for either Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer, not both. The maximum is 150.
• Job offer points return, but only for eligible high-wage occupations: 100 points if the occupation’s median wage is at least twice the average, 70 points for 1.5 to under 2 times, and 50 points for 1.3 to under 1.5 times. Other jobs get 0.
• An LMIA is no longer needed for a job offer to count for eligibility or points. Officers still check that the offer is genuine.
• Existing profiles will be recalculated, which may take up to two weeks, and invitation rounds will pause during that time.

What it means for Nigerians abroad: most applicants in Nigeria have no Canadian experience or job offer, so their scores should not move much. But a genuine offer in a high-wage occupation could add up to 100 points. Expect anyone selling fake “LMIA jobs” to change their pitch. Buying a job offer is fraud and can get you banned.

Real 2026 Draw Results: What Scores Are Getting Invited

These are from IRCC’s official rounds-of-invitations data, read on 18 October 2026:

How to read this:

• French is the biggest opening. French draws in 2026 have usually invited 4,000 to 5,500 people at a time, with cut-offs between 382 and 435. You need at least CLB 7 in all four French skills, and no work-experience requirement applies to this category.
• Healthcare and trades have been held every few months, with cut-offs around 467 to 477 (healthcare 467 on 20 February, 475 on 25 June and 4 September; trades 477 on 2 April and 476 on 1 October). These are open to experience gained in Nigeria.
• CEC draws (516 to 523 since August) and the physician, senior manager and researcher categories need Canadian work experience, so a first-time applicant in Lagos or Abuja cannot use them.
• In IRCC’s 2026 round data we could see (rounds 398 to 450), there were no STEM or Education category draws and no all-program draws, even though both categories are on IRCC’s list.

The 2026 Categories and the 12-Month Rule

IRCC lists ten categories for 2026: French-language proficiency; healthcare and social services; STEM; trades; education; transport; physicians with Canadian work experience; senior managers with Canadian work experience; researchers with Canadian work experience; and skilled military recruits.

For healthcare, STEM, trades, education and transport, you need at least 12 months of full-time work (or the same amount part-time) in one listed occupation within the past 3 years. The experience can be in Nigeria or Canada and does not need to be continuous. For the physician, senior manager and researcher categories, the 12 months must be in Canada. French has no work-experience rule.

Practical tip: check that the National Occupational Classification (NOC) code in your profile matches what your reference letters describe. A Nigerian nurse, electrician or truck driver whose duties match a listed NOC can be invited in a category draw at a score far below the CEC cut-off.

Step-by-Step: From Nigeria to Canadian PR

1. Check eligibility. Use IRCC’s “Come to Canada” tool and the FSW requirements above.
2. Take an approved language test. Book IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core (or TEF/TCF Canada for French). Aim above CLB 7. Higher scores add a lot of points.
3. Get your ECA. Use an IRCC-designated organisation, such as World Education Services (WES). Ask your Nigerian university to send transcripts early, because this step often takes the longest.
4. Collect reference letters. Each letter should be on company letterhead and show your job title, duties, hours a week, salary and dates.
5. Create your Express Entry profile. It is free and stays valid for up to 12 months.
6. Raise your score while you wait. Retake your language test, learn French, or apply to provincial streams that match your occupation.
7. Receive an ITA. You then have 60 days to submit a complete PR application.
8. Submit documents and pay fees. This includes a police certificate from Nigeria and from every country you lived in for 6 months or more since age 18, a medical exam with an IRCC panel physician, and proof of funds.
9. Give biometrics at a Visa Application Centre when IRCC asks.
10. Get your COPR and land. Check IRCC’s processing-times tool for the current estimate rather than relying on figures quoted online.

Worked example (IRCC fees only):

• Single applicant: CAD $1,590 + $85 biometrics = CAD $1,675.
• Couple with two children: $1,590 + $1,590 + $270 + $270 + $170 biometrics = CAD $3,890.

Proof of Funds

Unless you are applying under CEC, or you are allowed to work in Canada and have a valid job offer, you must show that the money is yours and available to you. IRCC’s current table is labelled “Updated July 7, 2025”:

Count family members you are not bringing too, such as a spouse staying in Nigeria. Use official bank letters that show your current balance and average balance. Avoid sudden large deposits you cannot explain. IRCC usually updates these amounts once a year, so check the page again before you submit.

Avoiding Immigration Scams

• Check any consultant on the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) public register, or check a lawyer with their provincial law society.
• Pay IRCC fees only through IRCC’s online account. Never pay “processing fees” into a personal Nigerian account.
• Nobody can guarantee an ITA or PR. No one has “connections” at IRCC.
• Never buy a job offer. Misrepresentation can bring a five-year ban.
• Doing it yourself is realistic. Express Entry was built for applicants to complete on their own using canada.ca guidance.
