📌 Quick answer: On a gross salary of ₦150,000 a month in 2026, you pay ₦10,700 PAYE tax and ₦12,000 pension (8%), so your take-home pay is ₦127,300, an effective tax rate of 7.1%. ₦150,000 is the exact point where the new Nigeria Tax Act and the old rules give the same tax bill. What makes the new law better for you is rent relief: if you pay ₦100,000 a month in rent and claim it, your tax falls to ₦7,700 and you take home ₦130,300.
₦150,000 a month is a typical salary for experienced graduates in their first few years of work, many bank and fintech support roles, mid-level civil servants with allowances and skilled staff in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Since 1 January 2026, PAYE on that pay has been worked out under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
Here is the full breakdown, the surprising comparison with the old rules, and the reliefs that make the biggest difference at this level.
₦150,000 Salary After Tax: The Full Breakdown
| Item | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | ₦150,000 | ₦1,800,000 |
| Pension (8% employee contribution) | −₦12,000 | −₦144,000 |
| Chargeable income | ₦138,000 | ₦1,656,000 |
| Taxed at 0% (first ₦800,000 a year) | ₦66,667 | ₦800,000 |
| Taxed at 15% (the rest) | ₦71,333 | ₦856,000 |
| PAYE tax | −₦10,700 | −₦128,400 |
| Take-home pay | ₦127,300 | ₦1,527,600 |
How the ₦10,700 Is Worked Out
- Yearly gross pay: ₦150,000 × 12 = ₦1,800,000.
- Take off pension: 8% of ₦1,800,000 is ₦144,000, leaving a chargeable income of ₦1,656,000.
- Apply the bands: the first ₦800,000 is taxed at 0%. The remaining ₦856,000 falls in the 15% band, which covers the next ₦2.2 million.
- Tax for the year: 15% of ₦856,000 = ₦128,400.
- Monthly PAYE: ₦128,400 ÷ 12 = ₦10,700.
Take-home pay is ₦150,000 − ₦12,000 − ₦10,700 = ₦127,300. On ₦150,000 you are still nowhere near the 18% band, which only starts once your chargeable income passes ₦3 million a year (about ₦272,000 a month gross with 8% pension).
Old Rules vs New Rules: Exactly the Same at ₦150,000
| ₦150,000 a month | 2025 (old PITA rules) | 2026 (Nigeria Tax Act 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Reliefs | Pension + CRA of ₦560,000 a year | Pension; first ₦800,000 taxed at 0% |
| Chargeable income (yearly) | ₦1,096,000 | ₦1,656,000 |
| Tax for the year | ₦128,400 | ₦128,400 |
| Monthly PAYE | ₦10,700 | ₦10,700 |
| Monthly PAYE with ₦1.2m rent relief claimed | ₦10,700 (no rent relief existed) | ₦7,700 |
This is not a coincidence of rounding. With 8% pension and no other reliefs, the two sets of rules produce identical tax at a gross salary of exactly ₦1.8 million a year. Below that, the new law charges less: at ₦100,000 a month you save ₦1,500 (see our ₦100,000 salary breakdown). Just above it, the new law charges slightly more if you claim nothing: about ₦25 more a month at ₦160,000 and ₦73 more at ₦200,000.
So at this level, whether the new law helps you comes down to one question: do you pay rent, and has your employer applied the relief?
What Changes Your Number
| Your situation (₦150,000 gross) | Monthly tax | Monthly take-home |
|---|---|---|
| Standard: 8% pension on the full ₦150,000 | ₦10,700 | ₦127,300 |
| You pay ₦50,000 a month rent (₦600,000 a year) and claim rent relief | ₦9,200 | ₦128,800 |
| You pay ₦100,000 a month rent (₦1.2m a year) and claim rent relief | ₦7,700 | ₦130,300 |
| Your rent is ₦2.5m a year or more (maximum relief of ₦500,000) | ₦4,450 | ₦133,550 |
| Your employer deducts NHF on a ₦75,000 basic salary (₦1,875) | ₦10,418.75 | ₦125,706.25 |
| Pension is on basic + housing + transport of ₦105,000 only (₦8,400) | ₦11,240 | ₦130,360 |
| Your employer runs no pension scheme | ₦12,500 | ₦137,500 |
Rent relief: worth up to ₦6,250 a month at this salary
The Nigeria Tax Act lets you deduct 20% of the rent you pay in a year, up to ₦500,000, before tax is worked out. Because your income is taxed at 15%, every ₦100,000 of relief saves you ₦15,000 a year. On ₦1.2 million rent the relief is ₦240,000, which saves ₦36,000 a year, or ₦3,000 a month. The maximum ₦500,000 relief, reached when your rent is ₦2.5 million a year, saves ₦75,000 a year: ₦6,250 a month.
Payroll can only apply it if HR knows. Tell them what you pay, and keep your tenancy agreement and rent receipts, which your employer may ask for. If you live in your own house, a family house or staff quarters, there is no rent relief to claim.
Pension and the “pensionable pay” question
The Pension Reform Act 2014 bases your 8% on basic salary, housing and transport. Many ₦150,000 pay packages include other allowances, so the pension deduction can be lower than ₦12,000. That raises your tax slightly but leaves more cash in hand. Your employer adds at least 10% of the same amount on top, which is not taken from your salary.
Salaries Close to ₦150,000

| ₦140,000 | ₦9,320 | ₦119,480 | ₦9,620 |

| ₦200,000 | ₦17,600 | ₦166,400 | ₦17,527 |
In this range every extra ₦10,000 of gross pay adds ₦1,380 in PAYE and ₦800 in pension, so you keep ₦7,820 of it.
