📌 Quick answer: Manchester City host AEK Athens in the Champions League league phase on Tuesday 20 October 2026, kick-off 8pm Nigerian time (20:00 BST) at the Etihad Stadium. Both clubs have 3 points from two games: City are 17th and AEK are 20th in the 36-team table. This is the first competitive meeting between the clubs. City have injury checks on Erling Haaland (foot knock) and several others after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Ipswich, while AEK striker Barnabás Varga is coming back from a muscle injury. Our prediction: Manchester City 3-1 AEK Athens. The match is on SuperSport via DStv in Nigeria.
Manchester City return to Champions League action on Tuesday night with something to prove. Enzo Maresca’s side have been close to perfect in the Premier League, winning all seven of their league games, but last Wednesday’s 4-2 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain was a reminder that Europe is a different test. Now Greek champions AEK Athens, back in the Champions League league phase for the first time since 2018/19, arrive at the Etihad for a game that both clubs will see as an opportunity.
Here is everything you need to know before kick-off, including the Nigerian time, team news, recent form, the (very short) head-to-head history and our prediction.

Where the Teams Stand
After two rounds, the 36-team table is crowded. Thirteen clubs, from 12th to 24th, are level on 3 points, and Manchester City and AEK Athens are two of them.
| Team | UCL position | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | Pts | Domestic league |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester City | 17th | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 1st in Premier League (7 wins from 7) |
| AEK Athens | 20th | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 2nd in Greek Super League (one point behind Panathinaikos before matchday 2) |
City started with a 2-0 win at Porto on 8 September, with Haaland scoring both goals, before PSG beat them 4-2 at the Etihad on 14 October. AEK beat LASK 1-0 in Athens on Matchday 1, then lost 3-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge in London, where Shakhtar are playing their home games.
In this format, the top eight go straight to the round of 16, and clubs finishing 9th to 24th go into the knockout phase play-offs. A win on Tuesday would take either side to 6 points and into the group of teams chasing the top eight.

City have won four of their last five, scoring 18 goals. The worry for Maresca is at the other end: they have conceded nine goals in their last three home games (three against Sunderland, four against PSG and two against Ipswich). AEK have three wins, a draw and a defeat in their last five. Their scheduled league match at Atromitos on Saturday 17 October is listed as postponed by match-data sites, which, if confirmed, means they arrive in Manchester with more rest than City.
Head-to-Head
There is no head-to-head history to speak of. Manchester City and AEK Athens have never met in a competitive match. Tuesday’s game at the Etihad will be the first. We checked City’s full European record and found no previous competitive meeting with AEK in any UEFA competition.
City’s record against Greek clubs in general is the closest guide we have:
| Season | Competition | Match | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2010/11 | Europa League, round of 32 | Aris vs Man City | 0-0 |
| 2010/11 | Europa League, round of 32 | Man City vs Aris | 3-0 |
| 2020/21 | Champions League, group stage | Man City vs Olympiacos | 3-0 |
| 2020/21 | Champions League, group stage | Olympiacos vs Man City | 0-1 |
Key stats:
- This is the first competitive meeting between Manchester City and AEK Athens.
- City are unbeaten in four games against Greek clubs in Europe (three wins, one draw), scoring seven and conceding none.
- Both of City’s home games against Greek opposition finished 3-0.
Team News
Both managers will speak at their pre-match press conferences on Monday, when team news will be confirmed. Here is what we know so far.
Manchester City
The main concern is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian scored twice against Ipswich on Saturday (see our Manchester City vs Ipswich preview) but took a blow to the foot late in the match and limped off at full time. Maresca said afterwards: “We will see. I asked him and he said he was OK, so hopefully it is nothing serious.” Maresca also said several players picked up knocks in a short spell of the game, naming Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovačić, Antoine Semenyo and Nico O’Reilly, and that the club would assess them. According to Sky Sports, Semenyo was the one whose condition most needed checking.
Phil Foden returned to the starting line-up against Ipswich after his red card in the Manchester derby, and he scored the opening goal. With an away trip to Aston Villa coming on Saturday 24 October, Maresca may rotate.
AEK Athens
Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga has been out with a muscle injury since mid-September and missed the defeat in London, where Zini started alongside Luka Jović. Injury databases list his absence as ending on 13 October, so he could be back in the squad, but his fitness has not been confirmed. We have not found reports of any other AEK injuries. Against Shakhtar, Nikolić started Brignoli in goal; Rota, Moukoudi, Relvas and Pilios in defence; Majer, Vitális, Marin and Koita in midfield; with Zini and Jović up front.
Players to Watch
Manchester City
Erling Haaland: if he is fit, he is the biggest threat on the pitch. Haaland has 12 goals in all competitions this season, including four in the Champions League (two at Porto and two against PSG). Against Ipswich he became the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 100 non-penalty goals.
Phil Foden: back in the side and on the scoresheet against Ipswich. Foden gives City creativity between the lines, and he will be important if City need to break down a deep AEK defence.
AEK Athens
Luka Jović: the former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker is AEK’s main source of goals. He had six goals in ten appearances going into the Shakhtar game, including both goals in the 2-1 win at Volos and the opener in the 4-0 play-off win over Levski Sofia.
Lovro Majer: the Croatian midfielder scored AEK’s goal at Stamford Bridge to give them a 1-0 lead before Shakhtar came back. He links midfield and attack, and much of AEK’s creativity runs through him.
What the Numbers Say
The numbers point towards a City win, with goals at both ends a real possibility.
- City’s league form is historic. Seven Premier League wins from seven make Maresca the first manager to win his first seven league games in charge of a new club. That run also equals City’s best-ever start to a league season, set in 1897/98.
- City score freely. They have scored 18 goals in their last five games in all competitions.
- But City concede too. PSG scored three times in the first half at the Etihad last week, and City have let in at least two goals in each of their last three home matches.
- City still create. In the PSG defeat, City had 27 shots and an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.53, compared with PSG’s 1.89, according to match data. They lost because of finishing and defending, not a lack of chances.
- AEK have scored in their Champions League games. They found the net against both LASK and Shakhtar, and they took the lead in London before losing.
- Greek clubs have struggled against City. Four meetings with Greek opposition in Europe have produced no goals against City.
We could not find a published win probability for this match from an independent statistical model, so we have not included one.
Our Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 AEK Athens
City are in excellent form domestically and have the quality to win this comfortably, especially at home. Even after the PSG defeat, they created more chances than the European champions, and Haaland is scoring almost every week. If he plays, AEK will find it very hard to keep him quiet for 90 minutes.
That said, City’s defence has not been convincing at the Etihad, and AEK have attacking players who can punish mistakes. Jović is in form, Majer showed in London that AEK can score against good opposition, and the Greek side may be fresher if their weekend match was indeed postponed. We expect City to control the game and win, but we think AEK will score at least once.
Our prediction: Manchester City 3-1 AEK Athens.
