Opay is one of Nigeria’s most used fintech platforms — with tens of millions of active users sending money, paying bills, and buying airtime daily. Transferring money from your Opay wallet to any Nigerian bank account — whether GTBank, Access Bank, Zenith, UBA, First Bank, Kuda, PalmPay, or any other — is one of the most common transactions Opay users need to do. The good news is that it is fast, simple, and available through multiple channels: the Opay app, the *955# USSD code, and even a direct shortcode for specific transfers. This guide covers every method, every relevant fee, all daily limits by account tier, and full troubleshooting for the most common transfer problems in 2026.
Method 1: Transfer from Opay to Bank — Using the Opay App (Recommended)
The Opay mobile app is the fastest and most user-friendly way to send money from your Opay wallet to any Nigerian bank. Here is the complete step-by-step process:
- Open the OPay app on your smartphone — download from Google Play or Apple App Store if not installed
- Log in using your 4-digit or 6-digit PIN, or biometrics (fingerprint/Face ID) if enabled
- On the home screen, tap “Transfer” (the arrow icon, usually in the quick-action row)
- Select “To Bank Account” from the transfer options (vs “To Opay User” for transfers within Opay)
- From the bank list, select the recipient’s bank — the list includes all Nigerian commercial banks, microfinance banks, and fintech platforms (Kuda, PalmPay, Moniepoint, etc.)
- Enter the recipient’s 10-digit NUBAN account number carefully
- The recipient’s full name will automatically appear for confirmation — verify it matches the intended recipient before proceeding. If the name shown is wrong, stop and recheck the account number
- Enter the amount to transfer
- Add a narration/description (optional) — this appears on both your and the recipient’s transaction record
- Review the transfer summary — confirm bank name, account number, beneficiary name, and amount
- Tap “Transfer” or “Confirm” and enter your Opay PIN to authorise
- Transfer is processed instantly — you will receive a success notification and the recipient is credited within seconds
Save beneficiaries: After a successful transfer, tap “Save Beneficiary” to store the recipient’s details for future transactions. This speeds up subsequent transfers significantly — you won’t need to re-enter the bank and account number each time.
Method 2: Transfer from Opay to Bank — Using USSD Code *955# (No Internet Needed)
Flashchange.io’s Opay USSD guide confirms: “The Opay USSD code is *955#. This code allows you to make different transactions on the payment platform. It works across MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile. You don’t need internet access — it works entirely offline.” Here is how to use it for bank transfers:
- Dial *955# on the phone number registered to your Opay account
- From the menu, select “Transfer” (usually option 1 or 2)
- Select “Other Banks” or “Transfer to Bank Account”
- Enter the recipient’s bank account number (10 digits)
- Select the bank name from the list provided
- The system displays the account name — confirm it is correct
- Enter the amount to transfer
- Enter your Opay USSD PIN to authorise
- You receive a confirmation SMS when the transfer is successful
Quick transfer shortcode: TeezabTech’s 2026 Opay guide confirms: “Dial *955*1*Amount*Recipient’s Opay Phone Number# for Opay-to-Opay transfers.” For bank transfers, use the *955# menu navigation described above rather than a shortcode, as bank transfers require selecting the specific bank from a list.
Opay Transfer Fees and Charges 2026
Understanding Opay’s fee structure in 2026 requires noting an important change: from January 2026, the Nigerian government’s new stamp duty rules (under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025) affected all electronic transfers including fintech platforms. TechCabal’s December 2025 analysis confirmed: “From 2026, sending ₦10,000 or more will cost between ₦75 and ₦100 per transfer, depending on the amount. While the money received stays whole, the sender pays more in transfer fees.” This applies across all fintech platforms including Opay.
| Transfer Type | Fee Structure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Opay to Opay (same platform) | Free | No charge for transfers between Opay users |
| Opay to other banks (below ₦10,000) | Small Opay fee (check app for current rate) | Standard interbank transfer fee applies |
| Opay to other banks (₦10,000 and above) | Opay fee + ₦50–₦100 stamp duty (sender pays) | New from January 2026 — TechCabal confirmed fintechs now included in stamp duty regime |
Important: Always check the exact fee displayed in the Opay app before confirming any transfer — Opay shows the full fee breakdown (platform fee + stamp duty where applicable) on the transfer confirmation screen before you enter your PIN. The fee is deducted from your Opay balance, not from the transfer amount (the recipient receives the full amount you entered).
Opay Transfer Limits 2026 — By Account Tier
Prestmit.io’s 2026 Opay USSD guide confirms the tier-based limit structure: “Daily transaction limit for Tier 1 is N50,000, daily limit for Tier 2 is N500,000, and Tier 3 has N5,000,000.”
| Account Tier | Daily Transfer Limit | Requirements | How to Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 (Basic) | ₦50,000/day | Phone number + Opay account only | Already at Tier 1 on registration |
| Tier 2 | ₦500,000/day | BVN + Valid ID upload | Opay app → Profile → Upgrade → provide BVN + ID |
| Tier 3 | ₦5,000,000/day | Tier 2 + Proof of address + Face verification | Opay app → Profile → Top Tier → upload proof of address + selfie |
Legit.ng confirms the upgrade process: “OPay Tier 2 significantly increases your limits, often to a maximum daily transaction of ₦200,000 and a maximum account balance of ₦500,000. Upgrading your account to Tier 3 increases your transaction limit and allows unlimited account balance.” Note that Legit.ng and Prestmit cite slightly different Tier 2 figures — always confirm your current limits in the Opay app under Profile → Limits.
How to Upgrade Your Opay Account to Increase Transfer Limits
If your daily transfer limit is insufficient for your needs, upgrading your Opay account tier takes 5–10 minutes via the app:
Upgrade to Tier 2
- Open the Opay app and tap your profile icon (top left)
- Select “Upgrade Account” or “Account Tier”
- Select “Upgrade to Tier 2”
- Enter your BVN (11-digit Bank Verification Number) — the system verifies automatically
- Upload a clear photo of your valid government-issued ID (NIN card, national ID, voter’s card, international passport, or driver’s licence)
- Submit — verification is usually instant or within minutes
- Your Tier 2 limits activate immediately after successful verification
Upgrade to Tier 3
- Complete Tier 2 first (as above)
- In the app, select “Upgrade to Tier 3”
- Upload proof of address — a recent utility bill, bank statement, or tenancy agreement (not older than 3 months) showing your name and address
- Complete facial verification — a selfie is taken and matched against your uploaded ID
- Submit and await approval — Tier 3 approval may take 24–48 hours for manual review
What to Do If Your Opay Transfer Fails
The OPay Review 2026 on WestAfricaTradeHub acknowledges common issues: “Failed transactions or ‘pending’ transfers that require a reversal process, and delayed transfers, especially during peak periods or network downtime” are among the most common Opay user complaints. Here is the correct response for each failure scenario:
Scenario 1: Money Debited, Recipient Not Credited
This is the most anxiety-inducing transfer failure — money leaves your wallet but the recipient doesn’t receive it. In most cases, the money is automatically reversed to your Opay wallet within 24–72 hours under the CBN’s automated reversal framework. If not reversed after 72 hours: open the Opay app → tap the transaction in your history → select “Dispute Transaction” — provide the transaction reference number, date, amount, and recipient details. Opay’s support team initiates a reversal request through NIBSS. Contact Opay support via the in-app chat or email support@opaynigeria.com with your transaction reference for faster resolution.
Scenario 2: Transfer Declined (Insufficient Limit)
If your transfer is declined with a “limit exceeded” message, you have reached your daily transfer ceiling for your current tier. Options: (1) upgrade your account tier as described above to unlock higher limits; (2) split the transfer across multiple days if timing allows; or (3) use a different payment platform for the excess amount.
Scenario 3: Wrong Account Number (Transferred to Wrong Person)
This is the most difficult reversal scenario. Contact Opay support immediately through the in-app chat with your transaction reference. Opay initiates a recall request to the recipient’s bank. If the recipient declines the recall or the bank cannot retrieve the funds, you may need to pursue legal channels. The critical prevention: always confirm the beneficiary name that appears after entering the account number before confirming any transfer — the name verification step is your protection against this error.

Opay Features Beyond Transfers: Full Platform Overview 2026
OPay’s 2026 platform review confirms the breadth of services: “Create an account on the spot. Use one app for bill payment, airtime, data, betting, electricity, TV, and more.” Beyond sending money to banks, Opay in 2026 offers:
- OWealth: An interest-earning savings wallet within Opay — “Use OWealth as a spendable balance while earning daily interest.” Funds in OWealth earn interest while remaining accessible for spending
- Opay Debit Card: Virtual and physical debit card linked to your Opay wallet — usable for online payments and POS transactions anywhere Mastercard is accepted
- Bill payments: DSTV, GOtv, electricity (all DisCos), betting platforms, water bills — all payable in-app
- Merchant QR payments: Scan QR codes at Opay-registered merchants for instant payment without cash
- Opay Loans (via OKash/EaseMoni): Loan amounts range from ₦3,000 to ₦2,000,000 depending on account status, with repayment periods of 7–365 days — accessed through the Opay app’s loan section
- Cashback rewards: “Buy airtime or data and get cashback” — PalmPay is more aggressive with cashback but Opay offers periodic rewards on airtime and bill payments
Opay Safety and Security Tips 2026
As a platform handling billions of naira in daily transactions, Opay is a target for fraud. Protect your Opay account with these security practices:
- Never share your PIN: Your Opay transaction PIN is private — Opay customer service agents never ask for it. Any message or call requesting your PIN is fraud.
- Enable biometric authentication: Set up fingerprint or Face ID login in Opay app settings — this prevents unauthorised access if your phone is picked up while unlocked
- Set a transaction limit alert: The Opay app allows you to configure notifications for all transactions — enable these to detect any unauthorised activity immediately
- Verify before confirming: Always read the beneficiary name that appears after entering an account number before confirming — this one step prevents wrong-transfer errors entirely
- Use official channels only: Download Opay only from Google Play or Apple App Store — never from WhatsApp links or unofficial websites. Fake Opay apps steal login credentials and PIN numbers
- Report suspicious activity: Contact Opay immediately at support@opaynigeria.com or through in-app chat if you notice any transaction you didn’t initiate

Opay vs PalmPay vs Kuda: Which Is Best for Transfers in 2026?
Nigerian fintech users in 2026 typically maintain accounts on two or three platforms simultaneously — using each for its specific strength. Here is how Opay compares to its two main rivals for everyday transfers and payments:
| Feature | Opay | PalmPay | Kuda |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free monthly interbank transfers | None (fees apply above threshold) | Limited free transfers | 25 free transfers per month — winner |
| Cashback on airtime/bills | Occasional promotions | Consistent cashback on airtime — winner | Limited |
| USSD banking (no internet) | ✅ *955# — full service | Limited USSD | Limited USSD |
| Interest-earning wallet | OWealth savings feature | PalmPay Savings | Kuda Savings — consistently competitive rates |
| Loan access | OKash/EaseMoni via app | PalmCredit via app | Kuda Overdraft — salary-linked |
| Merchant network (QR/POS) | Largest merchant network in Nigeria — winner | Growing fast | Smaller merchant base |
| Daily transfer limit (Tier 3) | ₦5,000,000 | ₦5,000,000 | Varies by tier |
Best use for each: Use Kuda for your 25 free monthly interbank transfers — particularly for frequent bill payments and transfers above ₦5,000 where fees add up. Use PalmPay for airtime purchases (cashback rewards make it the cheapest airtime source). Use Opay when you need USSD banking without internet, when paying at Opay-registered merchants via QR code, or when making Opay-to-Opay transfers which are always free. Maintaining all three accounts costs nothing — there are no maintenance fees on any of these platforms — and gives you the best of each platform’s specific strength.
How to Fund Your Opay Wallet 2026
Before you can transfer from Opay, you need money in your Opay wallet. Here are the main ways to add funds to your Opay account in 2026:
- Bank transfer to your Opay account number: Your Opay wallet has a unique 10-digit NUBAN account number (sort code 999992) — transfer from any Nigerian bank to this account number and funds appear in your Opay wallet within seconds. This is the most common funding method
- USSD from any bank: Dial *955*2# or navigate via *955# → Add Money → follow prompts to initiate a bank-to-Opay transfer via USSD
- Cash deposit at Opay agents: Opay has a large network of registered agents across Nigeria (POS operators, small shops) who accept cash and credit your Opay wallet — particularly useful in areas where banking infrastructure is limited
- Salary direct deposit: Some employers can pay salaries directly to an Opay account number — the wallet functions like a bank account for receiving credit transfers from any Nigerian bank
Opay for Business: Collecting Payments from Customers
Beyond personal transfers, Opay is increasingly used by Nigerian small businesses as a payment collection tool. Opay’s merchant QR code system allows any registered business to generate a unique QR code — customers who have the Opay app can scan the QR code and pay the exact amount directly from their Opay wallet in seconds, with no card or cash needed. This is particularly popular at suya spots, market stalls, small shops, and service businesses (hair salons, photo studios, phone repair shops) where the payment process needs to be quick and the seller has no POS terminal.
Opay also offers POS terminal services for businesses that need to accept card payments — Opay Business POS terminals can be obtained through the Opay Business app or by contacting Opay’s merchant services team. The combination of QR code payments (free to set up), POS terminal (hardware cost applies), and direct bank transfer to your Opay account number makes Opay a comprehensive payment collection platform for Nigerian SMEs at lower cost than traditional bank merchant account solutions.
Opay Transaction History: How to Download and Use Your Statements
Opay transaction history and account statements are useful for personal budgeting, business accounting, and — increasingly — as proof of income or financial activity for loan applications. Here is how to access your Opay transaction records in 2026:
- In-app transaction history: Open the Opay app → tap “Transactions” or “History” in the bottom navigation — your full transaction history is displayed with dates, amounts, recipient details, and transaction references. You can scroll back through all transactions since account opening
- Download/share a statement: Tap on any transaction → select “Share Receipt” to generate a PDF receipt for that specific transaction. For a full account statement covering a date range, tap “Statement” in the Transactions section → select the date range → the statement is generated as a PDF and can be downloaded to your phone or shared via WhatsApp, email, or any other platform
- For business accounting: The monthly statement PDF export covers all debits, credits, and running balances — suitable as supporting documentation for basic business accounting, tax purposes, or showing financial history to lenders. Note that Opay statements, while legitimate financial records, may not carry the same weight as commercial bank statements for formal loan applications at traditional banks — some lenders specifically require statements from CBN-licensed commercial banks
Opay OWealth: Earn Interest While Keeping Money Available
One of Opay’s most underutilised features is OWealth — a savings sub-wallet within the Opay app that earns daily interest while keeping your funds available for spending. Unlike a traditional fixed deposit where your money is locked for a set period, OWealth allows you to add and withdraw funds at any time while still earning interest on your daily balance. The interest rate on OWealth is displayed in the app and is updated periodically — it has historically ranged from 10–15% per annum, paid daily into your OWealth balance. To use OWealth: open the Opay app → tap “OWealth” from the home screen → tap “Invest” → enter the amount to move from your main wallet to OWealth. The money remains visible and accessible — you can move it back to your main wallet at any time for spending. This makes OWealth a smarter place to park idle cash than leaving it in your main Opay wallet which earns zero interest while sitting unused.
Opay Regulatory Standing in Nigeria 2026
A question many Nigerians have about Opay and other fintech platforms is: how safe is my money? Understanding Opay’s regulatory standing provides the answer. OPay Digital Services Limited is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a Mobile Money Operator (MMO) — a regulated category of financial service provider under the CBN’s regulatory framework for payment system providers. As an MMO, Opay is required to: maintain customer funds in a pooled trust account at a CBN-licensed commercial bank (meaning customer deposits are backed by funds held at a regulated bank, not by Opay’s own operating capital); comply with CBN’s anti-money laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations; submit to regular CBN examination and reporting requirements; and maintain adequate capital and liquidity reserves. The practical implication: your Opay wallet balance is not at risk if Opay faces financial difficulties, because customer funds are held in trust at a commercial bank separate from Opay’s operating funds. This is fundamentally different from the situation with unlicensed informal money collection schemes.
OPay’s parent company — Opera Limited (the same company behind the Opera web browser) — is a publicly listed company on NASDAQ, adding a layer of regulatory and reporting accountability that purely private Nigerian fintechs do not have. While this does not eliminate all risks, it provides additional confidence that Opay operates within established financial and corporate governance frameworks. For amounts above ₦500,000–₦1,000,000, many financial advisors recommend distributing funds across a commercial bank account and a fintech wallet rather than holding very large sums exclusively in any single fintech platform — diversification as a basic risk management practice.
Opay Customer Service: Getting Help When Transfers Go Wrong
When an Opay transfer fails, is delayed, or goes to the wrong account, prompt action through the correct channels determines how quickly and successfully the issue is resolved. Here is the hierarchy of support channels for Opay transfer issues in 2026, ordered from fastest response to escalation path:
- In-app dispute (fastest for failed transfers): Open the Opay app → Transactions → find the failed transaction → tap “Dispute” or “Report Issue” → select the issue type (money debited, recipient not credited / wrong transfer / duplicate charge) → submit. The app’s dispute system automatically logs the reference number and flags it for Opay’s backend team. Most automated reversals for network-failed transfers are processed without manual intervention within 24–72 hours of the dispute being logged this way.
- In-app live chat: Open the Opay app → Help/Support → Live Chat → connect with an Opay customer service agent. Response times vary — typically 5–30 minutes during business hours (8am–8pm weekdays) and slower on weekends and public holidays. Live chat agents can view your transaction history in real time and initiate reversal requests for eligible transactions.
- Email support: Send a detailed email to support@opaynigeria.com including: your full name, registered phone number, transaction reference number(s), date and time of the failed transaction, the exact amount, and the recipient’s bank and account number. Email response takes 24–48 hours — use this for complex disputes that require documentation.
- Social media: @OPay_NG on Twitter/X and Opay’s verified Facebook page have support teams that respond to public complaints — often faster than email for simple queries that can be answered without accessing account-specific data. Avoid posting sensitive account information (account number, transaction references) in public tweets — use direct messages for anything requiring account-specific information.
- CBN Consumer Complaints: If Opay does not resolve a legitimate complaint within a reasonable timeframe (typically 10 working days), escalate to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Consumer Protection Department at consumerprotection@cbn.gov.ng. As a CBN-licensed Mobile Money Operator, Opay is subject to CBN consumer protection regulations and the CBN takes complaints against licensed operators seriously.
The key to fast resolution is always having your transaction reference number ready — this 12–16 digit reference (shown in your transaction receipt and SMS notification) is the identifier that allows Opay and recipient banks to locate the specific transaction in their systems. Screenshot or note down the reference number for every transfer above ₦10,000 immediately after making it — before any potential network issue prevents you from accessing the app to retrieve it later.
Opay in 2026 is a mature, CBN-regulated platform that handles billions of naira in daily transactions reliably. Use it with the same discipline you apply to any financial tool: verify beneficiaries before confirming, keep your PIN private, monitor transaction alerts, and resolve any issues promptly through official support channels. The combination of the app for convenient large transfers and *955# USSD for offline emergency transfers makes Opay one of the most versatile financial platforms available to Nigerians regardless of smartphone access or internet connectivity.
Opay International Transfers: Sending Money Abroad from Nigeria
One of the most frequently asked questions about Opay is whether it supports international money transfers — sending naira from Nigeria to recipients abroad, or receiving foreign currency into an Opay wallet. As of 2026, Opay’s core service remains domestic — it is optimised for naira transactions within Nigeria. However, Opay has partnerships with international remittance services that allow inbound transfers: diaspora Nigerians in the UK, US, Canada, and Europe can send money to Nigeria through Opay’s remittance partners, and the recipient receives naira directly into their Opay wallet. For outbound international transfers (sending naira abroad), Opay does not currently offer this service — you would need a commercial bank’s international wire transfer service, Wise, or another specialist remittance platform for outbound international payments.
Opay OWealth: Earn Interest on Your Wallet Balance
OWealth is Opay’s built-in savings and interest product — a feature that allows you to earn daily interest on funds you hold in the OWealth pocket rather than in your main spending wallet. Funds in OWealth are easily accessible — you can move money between OWealth and your main Opay wallet instantly whenever needed. The interest rate on OWealth varies and is displayed in the app — it has historically been competitive with or above standard commercial bank savings account rates. For Opay users who regularly hold significant balances in their wallet between transactions, activating OWealth means those idle funds earn interest daily rather than sitting without return. To activate OWealth: open the Opay app → tap “OWealth” from the home screen → read and accept the terms → transfer your desired amount from your main wallet to OWealth. Interest is credited daily and compounds automatically.
The Opay Referral Programme 2026
Opay maintains an active referral programme that rewards existing users for introducing new users to the platform. When an existing Opay user shares their unique referral code with a new user who downloads the app and completes their first transaction, both the referrer and the new user receive a cash reward credited to their Opay wallets. The specific referral reward amounts vary and are periodically updated — check your current referral reward in the Opay app under Profile → Referral or Invite Friends. Referral rewards have historically ranged from ₦100–₦500 per successful referral. For active Opay promoters — particularly those in social media or community networks — consistently sharing their referral code can generate meaningful supplementary income through the referral programme over time.
Opay Customer Care: All Support Channels 2026
When you need help with an Opay transaction, account issue, or security concern, use these official Opay Nigeria support channels:
- In-app chat support: Open Opay app → tap the chat icon or “Help” → select your issue category → chat with an agent. This is the fastest channel for most routine queries
- Email: support@opaynigeria.com — for detailed complaints, transaction disputes, and written documentation of issues. Include your registered phone number, transaction reference, and a clear description of the problem
- Social media: @OPayNG on X (Twitter) and Instagram — Opay’s social media team is responsive during business hours and can escalate urgent issues
- USSD support: *955# → Help → follow prompts for common self-service resolutions
For urgent issues (suspected account compromise, large unauthorised transaction, funds not received after transfer), always use the in-app chat first — it connects you to an agent fastest. Follow up immediately with an email to support@opaynigeria.com documenting the issue in writing, as written records are essential if the matter requires escalation to CBN’s consumer protection framework. Opay is regulated by the CBN and is obligated under CBN Consumer Protection Regulations to resolve valid complaints within specified timeframes — if Opay does not resolve your complaint satisfactorily, you can escalate to CBN at cpd@cbn.gov.ng.
