The Fisherman

Set in a Delta State fishing community rarely seen on Nollywood screens, The Fisherman is the quiet discovery of 2026’s May window. When the patriarch of a fishing family (RMD) disappears along with his trawler in the early hours of the morning, his wife (Ini Edo) and son (Timini Egbuson) must decide what to believe: accident, escape, or something darker that the community has been keeping buried.

RMD, who has been in the industry for four decades, brings extraordinary authority to a role that requires him to be present as an absence — his character’s weight is felt most when he is not on screen. Ini Edo delivers her best dramatic performance in years, carrying the film’s emotional core through a role that could easily have been reactive but which she makes intensely active.

Director Victor Okpala shows tremendous confidence in silence and space. The Delta waterways are shot with a painterly melancholy that makes the landscape feel as much a character as the people. The mystery at the film’s center is handled with admirable restraint — this is not a thriller, it is a drama in which a truth gradually becomes unavoidable.

A film that respects the intelligence of its audience at every turn. The Fisherman is the kind of film that stays with you for days.

Verdict: Gorgeous, patient, and emotionally devastating. One of the year’s most underrated films.
