3 Cold Dishes

The involvement of Burna Boy as executive producer announced 3 Cold Dishes as something different before a single frame was screened. A pan-African revenge thriller moving between Lagos, Dakar and Abidjan, with a multilingual cast and a visual palette borrowed from international cinema rather than the Nollywood playbook.

Director Martial Dansou brings a French West African sensibility that creates genuine tonal contrast with the Lagos sequences. Blossom Chukwujekwu adds the malevolence the story requires. The film’s greatest weakness is its nearly two-and-a-half-hour length.

Verdict: Ambitious and often stunning. A sign of where Nollywood’s international ambitions are pointing.
